Chasing after Qantas (see QANTAS TO AXE DUBAI FLIGHTS AND RETURN TO FLYING SINGAPORE-LONDON ) in pursuing the ultra long range, non stop routes, it seems Trans Tasman neighbour Air New Zealand, is also keen to capitalise on this and set some historical milestones of its own, mainly targeting premium leisure customers rather than corporate clients as Qantas is. It is planning to fly Auckland to Chicago and New York, non stop. This makes perfect strategic sense, as its largest long range market is the US, as well as South America and Asia. Tipped to either fly the Airbus A350 -900 ULR (arch rival to the Boeing 787) or the Boeing 777x, it is hoping to put its ambitions into reality. In preparing for the acquisition of these state of the art aircraft, Air New Zealand is planning to retire its workhorse Boeing 777-200ER fleet by the 2020s.
From March 25 2018 , Qantas will cease flights to Dubai as the stopover to London and return operating the Singapore-London route from Sydney with the A380. QF1 and 2 will replace 1 of the 2 daily flights operated by the A330, from Sydney-Singapore . This means that Qantas partner Emirates, will operate the Australian flights to and from Dubai. In addition, the Melbourne-Singapore route will also get the A380 replacing the A330 operated QF35/36 AND QF37/38 will be operated by the A330. This means that passengers can get access to first class and premium economy, which is not available on the A330 aircraft.
The decision to axe the Dubai flights from Australia with Qantas comes as Asia sees strong demand for travel , and that the soon to arrive first Boeing 787 Dreamliner for Qantas will replace the Melbourne-Dubai -London routes with the Melbourne-Perth-London flights.
